Kungshamra Area

Brief history about the area

Kungshamra is a residential area in Bergshamra, Solna municipality. It is an area of approximately 1,383 student housing located between Bergshamra center and Ulriksdal . The field was donated by the King Gustaf VI Adolf.

The original area consists of 812 apartments, of which 260 were family apartments. The area was built in 1965-1967 after the ELLT Architectural Office gained 1st place in the 1962 architectural competition in urban and residential areas. A community center was built in 1968, which included a central laundry. The older part is q-marked today . During 2003-2005, the area was expanded with 571 student housing units. The houses are owned and managed by Stiftelsen Stockholms Studentbostäder (SSSB). KHF , Kungshamra Tenant Association, take cares of tenants' interests in the area.

The area is made up of six identical housing groups. The 4-storey houses contain single rooms in groups of 10-12 rooms with shared kitchen, and are located to the outskirts of the area. The 2-storey houses contain family apartments; mainly 2-room apartments with 3-room function.

The area was planned as car-free, with parking outside. Landscape architect was Gunnar Martinsson . Farms and spaces are hard-wearing to withstand wear, with a variation in the soil coating. Martinsson said that the area did not require any planned playgrounds, as the whole area could function as a play and outdoor space.

The family apartment consists of 2 rooms and a kitchen, with three-room function. It is meant that the kitchen, the largest room of the apartment, has a dining area and a daily part, separated from the preparation part. The preparation part can be closed to hide only. Kitchens and living rooms are located on the farms, allowing parents to have a view of the children. The buildings were planned with balconies and exterior stairs, something that was never carried out.

The buildings are constructed of factory-made concrete elements in concrete , the Skarne system. The same system was used within the million program. The elements are highlighted with clear joints and unpainted textured surfaces. The windows were originally wooden frames and were painted in yellow, blue and red. The coloring was done in collaboration with the artist Åke Pallarp . It has later been replaced with aluminum frames. The architects wanted to achieve a contrasting vitality for the gravity of concrete using the strong colors.

The newer building is painted in gray or white and is adorned by French balconies and window frames in yellow. In the center of the area is a concrete sculpture of Picasso . The sculpture was donated to the student area in 1969 by construction manager Allan Skarne .
